The historical background of James Larkin

James Larkin was born on January 21, 1876, in Liverpool, England. He would later marry Elizabeth Brown at around 1903, and they were blessed with four sons. James is an experienced activist and a seasoned labor organizer who formed the Irish Transport as well as the General Workers Union. With time, the General workers developed to become the largest union in the country at the time.

After the Dublin Lockout, the ITGWU fell apart and that mad Larkin to travel to the United States of America in 1914. He kept on serving as a labor organizer and fervent Marxist even though he was deported later. While at Dublin, Ireland, he died on January 30, 1947.

Growing up from the Slums of Liverpool affected James’ academic development, and he obtained little formal education. He would then look out for casual jobs to supplement the income generated by the family.

In the process, he landed a job at the Liverpool docks where he became a foreman. The commitment in James Larkin in addition to the belief that workers were being mistreated, he decides to join the National Union of Docks Laborers (NUDL). At around 1905, Larkin chose to be a full-time trade union organizer of National Union of Docks Laborers (NUDL).

The militant strike techniques by James Larkin would alarm the NUDL, and he was later transferred to Dublin in 1907. It was in Dublin that he formed the Irish Transport and General Workers Union. At the advent of World War I, James started a massive anti-war demonstration in Dublin. He then traveled to the United States of America to raise enough funds to support the fight against the British.

While he was in America, James Joined the Socialist Party of America and the Industrial Workers of the world. In 1920, he was convicted of communism as well as criminal anarchy. Fortunately, he was set free after three years and deported to Ireland. James organized the Workers Union of Ireland that fortified recognition forms the Communist International in 1924.
